Meet Our Technology: How We Diagnose and Treat Dry Eye

At Mission Eye Care, we use advanced diagnostic tools and evidence based treatments to better understand and manage eye disease, especially dry eye and ocular surface conditions. Because no two patients are exactly alike, precise testing helps us identify the underlying cause rather than just treating symptoms.

Advanced diagnostic testing

A comprehensive dry eye assessment includes full evaluation of the ocular surface, which allows us to assess both the quality and stability of the tear film as well as the health of the eyelids and glands.

Our diagnostic testing includes:

• Infrared meibomian gland imaging to evaluate gland structure and function.
• Tear osmolarity testing to measure tear film stability.
• Tear volume assessment to evaluate tear production.
• Quantitative biomicroscopy measures including tear break up time, lipid layer analysis, and conjunctival redness grading.
• Corneal and conjunctival staining using vital dyes to detect surface damage.
• Anterior segment photography to document and monitor changes over time.

These tools allow us to identify whether the primary issue is tear deficiency, oil gland dysfunction, inflammation, or a combination of factors.

Treatment options tailored to your condition

Once we understand the cause of your symptoms, we build a personalized treatment plan. This may begin with at home therapies and prescription medications designed to improve tear quality, reduce inflammation, and support eyelid gland function.

In office treatment options

Depending on your diagnosis, treatment may include:

  • Blepharoexfoliation to remove debris and biofilm from the eyelid margin.
  • Intense pulsed light therapy to improve meibomian gland function and reduce inflammation. This is especially helpful for patients with ocular roscea.
  • Radiofrequency treatment to support gland expression and eyelid health.
  • Pulsed direct current biomodulation using Jett Plasma technology to promote tissue healing and reduce inflammation.

These therapies can be particularly helpful for patients with chronic or treatment resistant dry eye.

Advanced support when needed

In more complex cases, we may also recommend scleral lenses. These specialized lenses protect the ocular surface, maintain constant hydration, and can provide significant relief for patients with severe dry eye or ocular surface disease.

A technology driven approach to eye care

By combining detailed diagnostic testing with a full range of treatment options, we are able to move beyond symptom management and focus on long term eye health and comfort.

If you are experiencing persistent dryness, irritation, or vision fluctuations, a comprehensive assessment can help determine the most effective path forward.
